Easter is one of the most celebrated events in the Christian church calendar, and activities and church services around the Holy Week often bring in large crowds. Many church attendance statistics place Easter Sunday as the most-attended Christian church service of the year, followed by Christmas Eve services.1 Easter is also a big day for collecting church donations.
For these and many other reasons, it’s a good idea to plan Easter services, events, and decorations well in advance. It’s also important to assess an often-overlooked part of your worship space: your church chairs. Worn-out or inadequate seating can leave a negative impression on your guests and create unnecessary distractions during worship.
Here’s a quick guide on how to assess the condition of your church chairs and ensure your space is ready to welcome everyone for Easter services.

Signs Your Church Furniture Needs Attention
Not sure where to start? Here are the most common signs that your chairs may need to be repaired or replaced.
- Visible Wear and Tear: Faded or torn upholstery and scratched chair frames don’t make a good impression on church members and visitors. To make sure your church is more inviting to everyone who steps through the door, clean and repair any chairs that show signs of wear and tear. If the chairs aren’t repairable, it’s time to replace them.
- Unstable Chair Frames: Loose backrests, missing screws, and wobbly chair legs will make chairs unstable and hazardous to your guests. Some of these issues can be fixed inexpensively (such as missing screws), while other problems necessitate new chairs. If you need a few screws, chair glides, or other parts, contact our customer service team and we’ll ship them to you.
- Broken Parts: Cracked chair frames or other structural issues can compromise safety. If a frame is cracked, bent or has rough or sharp edges, the chair should be replaced. Check corners and other welded surfaces, as these areas tend to be where chair frames start to fail.
- Stained Seats or Backs: When there are noticeable stains, church chairs look run down and unsanitary. Frequent culprits include coffee, tea, candy, children’s snacks, and writing implements (pencils, markers, or pens). You can try lifting the stains with an upholstery cleaning spray and a clean cloth. If that doesn’t work, consider ordering replacement seat or back cushions from your Bertolini sales rep, or getting new chairs.
- Flat or Saggy Cushions: There are three ways to test seat cushions. Uncomfortable, flat, and disintegrating foam can cause pain and discomfort for your congregation. If a chair’s cushion doesn’t pass any of the following tests, the chair needs to be replaced.
- When you press down firmly with your hand on a seat cushion, it should squish down partway—but not all the way.
- When you pull your hand away, the cushion should quickly spring back to its original appearance.
- The cushion shouldn’t look or feel lumpy. If there are lumps, then the cushion or padding has separated or broken apart, and it needs to be replaced.
